Check out this new lens from Tamron made for Nikon cameras (DX mount). Featuring Tamron’s proprietary tri-axial Vibration Compensation (VC) mechanism that minimizes the effects of handheld camera shake, the lens will be available starting on September 17, 2009 in Japan. Tamron plans to introduce the lens in a Canon mount version shortly after the new Nikon mount version with built-in motor hits the market. The SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II (*1) VC LD Aspherical [IF] (Model B005NII) has a high speed f/2.8 wide-to-moderate-telephoto zoom lens designed exclusively for Nikon-mount digital SLR cameras with smaller sensors.

Tamron SP AF17-50MM with VR for Nikon

Tamron SP AF17-50MM with VR for Nikon “The new SP 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC covers the very popular 17-50mm focal length range (equivalent to 26-78mm in the full-frame 35mm format(*2)) making it extremely versatile. Its wide aperture and outstanding performance provide practical advantages in low-light shooting and aesthetic image control, thereby enriching the user’s range of creative expression. The new lens delivers impressive sharpness and striking contrast over its entire focal-length and aperture range, and at its maximum aperture of f/2.8 it produces beautiful images enhanced by shallow depth of-field, and smooth, natural transitions in out-of-focus areas of the image (i.e. excellent bokeh.) The new lens is equipped with Tamron’s proprietary Vibration Compensation (VC) image stabilization mechanism, which controls the effects of camera shake in three planes. VC provides more opportunities for sharp hand-held photography at the slow shutter speeds needed when shooting in low-light conditions (e.g. night or indoor scenes) dramatically enhancing the user’s level of photographic freedom.”

D3x

Nikon has released the D3x finally. This is one very expensive DSLR. Why would anyone want to pay $3,800 more for a camera that is mostly identical to, but a lot slower than a D3?

For almost double the price of the D3, ($3,800 extra), the D3X is a poorer camera than the original D3. But wait…

“This is the camera that many professional photographers have been waiting for,” said Robert Cristina, Manager Professional Products and NPS at Nikon Europe. “Just as the D3 has become the professionals’ camera of choice in sports photography, the D3X’s extremely high imaging resolution will raise the bar for commercial, fashion and stock photography. The results speak for themselves: this is without doubt our highest-quality camera to date.”

The D3X, with its microscopic little pixels gasping for photons, is maxed out at ISO 1,600, and at ISO 2,500 is starting to make excuses for quality, which is why regular ISOs stop at ISO 1,600 on the D3X.

Features:

  • Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with 24.5 megapixels
  • Wide sensitivity range starting at ISO 100
  • New EXPEED-based image processing
  • High-speed performance meets the most rigorous professional demands
  • Realizing reliable auto control: Scene Recognition System
  • AF system employing high-density 51-point AF
  • High-resolution 3-inch LCD monitor with approx. 920k-dots (VGA), 170° wide-viewing angle and reinforced glass
  • Active D-Lighting — reproducing brightness as you see it

New Nikon 50mm f1.4

Posted by: Nikon Depot  :  Category: Lenses, Nikon

Nikon has introduced a new, fast 50 mm prime lens. The new F1.4G, 50 mm AF-S lens features a Silent Wave Motor plus new coatings to reduce flare and chromatic aberration. And, since this lens has the built-in focus motor, this is the first 50 mm lens with autofocus support when attached to a D40/D40x or D60. The new lens is scheduled to ship in December for $439.

It is puzzling that Nikon left out nano-coating, which seems to delineate this as a non-professional lens. But the build quality looks good in the picture, at about the level of the 60AFS (which has a great build, by the way). The 58mm filter thread is also a little dubious– why not just stretch the front rim a bit more to 62mm, which seemed to be the new mid-range prime standard (as on the 105VR and 60AFS)? That means either the inconvenience of a step-up ring, or at least 2 new filters which will only be compatible with this one Nikkor and nothing else!

However, by all accounts every mid-to-pro lens Nikon has rolled out in the last few years has been amazing, including the few I’ve been able to afford, and it makes no sense that Nikon would suddenly punt on the 50, as the 50/1.4 is one of the most important lenses in any brand’s lineup

PRESS RELEASE:

NIKON CELEBRATES THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF NIKKOR OPTICAL EXCELLENCE WITH AN ALL-NEW 50mm f/1.4 PRIME LENS

75 Years Later and 45 Million Lenses Produced, the NIKKOR Pedigree Continues to Thrive with the Introduction of the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens

MELVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 22, 2008) – Nikon Inc. celebrates 75 years of defining optical excellence with the release of the newly engineered AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4 prime lens that is considered by many photographers to be an essential tool with a focal length that closely replicates the visual perspective of the human eye when used with an FX-format D-SLR. Nikon’s optical expertise and modern technological advances, such as the Silent Wave Motor, help to deliver outstanding operation that is critical for Nikon FX and DX-format photographers who demand the pinnacle of photographic performance.

Ideal for travel, event, environmental and general photography in a wide variety of conditions, the new AF-S 50mm f/1.4 lens combines a superb optical formula with an ultra-fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, making it destined to become an instant classic in this digital age. This compact lens continues the tradition of NIKKOR precision optics to provide photographers with sharp, high-resolution images and the ability to focus as close as 1.5 feet for added versatility. The integration of an ultra-compact Silent Wave Motor ensures fast, whisper-quiet operation.

“The traditional 50mm lens has been a mainstay of photography for generations and deserves a place in every enthusiast and professional’s camera system. Experienced photographers have always appreciated the incredible image fidelity and low-light ability that a precisely engineered 50mm lens can deliver,” said Edward Fasano, general manager for marketing, SLR Systems Products at Nikon Inc. “In addition, seasoned shooters often prefer the photographic discipline imposed by the use of prime lenses. Now, a new generation of photographers is discovering the freedom of capturing images that would be impossible with anything but an ultra-fast-aperture lens. Our 75 years of high-performance optical experience and stringent quality standards have won the hearts of photographers around the world, as Nikon is also celebrating 45 million NIKKOR lenses produced. In fact, five million of these lenses were produced in the last year alone, further reinforcing our contemporary leadership in the digital SLR market.”

Thanks to the maximum aperture of f/1.4 and newly refined optical performance, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G teams perfectly with the low noise at high ISO sensitivity performance of Nikon D-SLRs such as the D3 and new D700 cameras. When used on a Nikon DX-format digital SLR camera, the new AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G provides an ideal portrait picture angle, approximating that of a 75mm lens in use on a FX-format D-SLR or 35mm SLR camera.

A newly developed optical formula effectively corrects sagittal coma flare and coma aberration, delivering astonishing image quality and allowing more users to realize their creative vision with vivid clarity. Instances of lens flare and chromatic aberration are further suppressed through the use of Nikon’s exclusive Super Integrated Coatings, which also help ensure vividly accurate color balance. The rounded diaphragm opening combined with the nine-blade aperture contributes to a substantially more natural appearance of out-of-focus background elements.

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens is scheduled to be available at Nikon authorized dealers beginning December 2008 at an estimated selling price of $439.95.* For more information, please visit www.nikonusa.com.
